PA Turnpike Tuscarora Tunnel
McKamish was the HVAC contractor on the Tuscarora Tunnel Renovation Project for the Pennsylvania Turnpike between mile markers 186 and 187 in Willow Hill, Pennsylvania. The required upgrades sought to not only improve and modernize the existing tunnel systems by bringing it up to the NFPA-502 Tunnel Smoke Control Code, but also to maintain the safety for workers and vehicular traffic.
McKamish Sheet Metal Workers custom-fabricated all Saccardo nozzles and ductwork for the project. These high-velocity nozzles direct airflow and smoke through tunnels. The 12-inch water gauge stainless nozzle system was a new application for both McKamish and SMACNA, requiring close collaboration with the design consultant. Our team also contributed to the design, leveraging field investigations to develop the most effective solution.
