McKamish was the HVAC contractor for the new University of Pittsburgh Fifth and Halket building.

McKamish served as the HVAC contractor for the University of Pittsburgh’s Fifth and Halket Academic and Laboratory Building, a multi-use facility supporting both educational and research functions. The ninth and tenth floors house specialized laboratory spaces, including a kitchen lab, while the remaining floors consist of classrooms and administrative office space.

Located along the busy Fifth Avenue corridor, the project presented logistical challenges, particularly with crane operations. Multiple road closures were required to safely lift mechanical equipment to the roof, demanding careful coordination and planning to minimize disruption.

To improve efficiency, the team implemented a prefabrication strategy by pre-piping the air handling units prior to hoisting them into place. This approach significantly reduced installation time on the roof and proved to be a valuable solution that has since been applied to other projects.
