University of Pittsburgh BST Cooling Tower

McKamish was the prime mechanical contractor for the University of Pittsburgh Cooling Tower Replacement project. This project involved the installation of a new eight-cell cooling tower on the 17th-floor roof, requiring the use of a 500-ton crane. To minimize the duration of street closures, the team worked around the clock to complete critical lifts as efficiently as possible.

The scope also included the replacement of condenser water risers from the 5th floor up to the rooftop cooling towers. These risers were located within a confined shaft with limited access, presenting a significant installation challenge. To overcome this, an opening was created in the roof, allowing prefabricated pipe sections—sized to be transported via flatbed—to be lowered directly into the shaft.

This approach significantly reduced the amount of in-shaft welding required, improving safety and accelerating the overall project schedule
